CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps

What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with education awards and other benefits in exchange for a year or two of community service.¬† AmeriCorps members help meet the nation’s critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.

Community, Opportunity, Responsibility, and Empowerment

CORE Susquehanna AmeriCorps was established in 1994 as a project of the Union-Snyder Community Action Agency, located in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. AmeriCorps, also referred to as the ‘Domestic Peace Corps’, has its roots in the long tradition of service opportunities that includes the Civilian Conservation Corps, the GI Bill, the Peace Corps, VISTA, and the Points of Light Foundation.

C.O.R.E. Susquehanna AmeriCorps is a state program directly supervised by the state commission, PennSERVE. The Corporation for National Service, the umbrella agency for all such state programs, supports a range of service opportunities. These programs are funded by Congress and other support from local and private sector partners.

Dennis Huratiak is Director of C.O.R.E. Susquehanna AmeriCorps. Dennis oversees a wide range of responsibilities such as AmeriCorps contracts, regulations, objectives and measurements as well as site recruiting, reporting, and editing of position descriptions and duties.

Lacy Kreider  serves as member coordinator. She interviews interested persons, provides information to our participants, plans educational sessions and service projects and also tracks member progress through the program year.

Feel free to contact either of our staff if you have questions about becoming an AmeriCorps member or a participating service site.

CORE Susquehanna will allow participants to serve in our program who qualify under CNCS regulations to earn an Education Award for their term of service. Exceptions may occur under unusual circumstances at the discretion of CORE staff if Site placement does not occur before program start dates.
